Italo Bassi was born on 26 July 1969 in Fusignano, in the province of Ravenna.
After graduating from the Pellegrino Artusi hospitality school in Riolo Terme, he gained his first seasonal experiences in Riviera hotels before entering his first true temple of gastronomy: the Michelin-starred Trigabolo in Argenta. An avant-garde culinary laboratory where, under the guidance of Chef Igles Corelli and Bruno Barbieri, he developed technique, discipline and a refined sensitivity in handling ingredients.
A brief yet significant experience at the Michelin-starred “Osteria del Teatro,” led by Chef Filippo Chiappini Dattilo, preceded the step that would mark the beginning of an extraordinary career: at just 19 years old, he joined the brigade of Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence. From that moment on, each stage became a step forward.
Between 1992 and 1993 he moved to Tokyo, where he led the opening of Enoteca del Sol Levante. This pioneering project marked the spread of Italian haute cuisine in the East and strengthened the restaurant’s international reputation.
Upon returning to Italy in early 1993, he took the helm of Enoteca Pinchiorri’s kitchen as Executive Chef. Ten years later, he achieved one of the most coveted milestones in world gastronomy: the third Michelin star, restoring Enoteca Pinchiorri to the pinnacle of fine dining and further strengthening his bond with Giorgio Pinchiorri and Annie Feolde.
From that moment, the stage became global: from New York to Paris, from San Francisco to Los Angeles, from Stockholm to Vienna, from Bangkok to Singapore, from Hong Kong to Rio de Janeiro, from the United Arab Emirates to Australia. Italo Bassi became an ambassador of great Italian cuisine around the world.
In 2013 he inaugurated Confusion Verona, the first restaurant to bear his signature. Two years later, he officially left Enoteca Pinchiorri to fully embrace his entrepreneurial vision, which also took shape in Porto Cervo, where in 2016 he opened Confusion Restaurant within the Promenade du Port: an elegant and distinctive gastronomic destination where aesthetics, technique and identity blend in harmony.
At the same time, he continued his mission to promote Italian cuisine worldwide, bringing his gastronomic vision to countries such as Armenia, Georgia, Russia, Bulgaria and India, in addition to his previous international destinations. A constant commitment that has contributed to enhancing and affirming Italian cuisine as a global cultural heritage, strengthening its identity, prestige and universal appeal.
The first Michelin star arrived in 2019, making Confusion Restaurant the first in the history of the Costa Smeralda to receive this distinction. A milestone that has been consistently reaffirmed: the star has been renewed without interruption through 2026. An achievement that does not mark an endpoint, but rather reinforces the coherent and ever-evolving identity of his gastronomic philosophy.
Meanwhile, his journey was further enriched by roles and awards recognising his talent and contribution to the industry: Chef Team Leader at Boscolo Academy in Tuscania, Official Chef for Alfa Romeo events, recipient of the Tartufo d’Oro in Asti, the B’NU d’Oro for promoting Sardinian cuisine, and the Alziator Award in Cagliari.
In 2018, he was also appointed Ambassador of Peace in Moscow for his involvement in international non-profit initiatives.
In 2021, he chose to complement his creative work with a new challenge: education. As a lecturer at Mia Academy, he shares with new generations of chefs a gastronomic vision founded on rigour, curiosity and passion.
In 2024, his concept of hospitality evolved further as the Bubble Bar transformed into Bubble Bar Bistrot, a more informal and convivial space offering an essential, accessible and refined cuisine, while remaining true to the distinctive style of the Confusion universe.
The year 2025 marks another milestone in his journey. In Bonifacio, Corsica, the fine dining restaurant Finestra Bonifacio — inaugurated in 2023 and part of a project that also includes Ristorante D’Amore, a convivial table with refined character — earned its first Michelin Star, the first in the history of the Napoleonic citadel in Corsica. With this recognition, Italo Bassi became the only Italian chef in history to receive the prestigious Michelin distinction in both Italy and France: a double consecration that unequivocally celebrates the strength of a vision, the coherence of a path, and the greatness of a style — the Confusion style.
